An historic weekend for Harpenden Cricket Club

An historic weekend for Harpenden Cricket Club

Jonathan Taylor2 Sep 2024 - 11:24

This past weekend will be remembered as one of the most remarkable in our club’s history

Our 1st team delivered a spectacular performance on Saturday, defeating Shenley by 220 runs. The victory saw them crowned as the Herts Premier League Champions with a game to spare. This is, without doubt, the finest team Harpenden Cricket Club has ever produced, and they are truly deserving of this title. Congratulations to James Latham and his entire squad for their outstanding achievement.

The excitement didn’t stop there. Our 2nd team beat third-placed Ampthill by five
wickets to secure promotion to Division 1: a fantastic achievement. Congratulations to
skipper Jake Pankhurst and all the team. Seven of Saturday’s winning side came through the
Junior system at Harpenden CC.

Our third team also delivered an impressive win, away at Stevenage, against their second team. They now top their division and need to win next Saturday to claim the title and secure promotion. Congratulations to captain Jack Killen and all the team.

And as if the weekend couldn’t get any better, our Women’s 1st team maintained their unbeaten record on Sunday when they comfortably beat Flitwick by 78 runs to secure the league title. An incredible achievement and we couldn’t be prouder of Lizzie Ruxton and the whole squad.

Looking ahead to Saturday, September 7th

Next Saturday promises to be another momentous one for the club.
The 1st team will host runners-up Potters Bar on the Common, where we hope to see the Premier League trophy proudly displayed.
Our 2nd team are away at Berkhamsted against their 1st XI, and a win would see them crowned champions of Division 2a. It’s worth noting that they are already the highest ranking second eleven in Hertfordshire; next year, every one of their opponents will be strong first elevens.
Our 3rd team are at home to Reed 2s at St George’s. A win would see them become champions of Division 4b, a league where all their opponents this year have either been first or second elevens.
Meanwhile our 4th team have a tough fixture away at Dunstable 3s; our 5th team are away at Old Haberdashers 2s; our 6th team are at home to second place St Albans 5s; and, subject to availability, we hope to find an away fixture for our Wizards.

Join us for our Annual Awards

After cricket on Saturday, we hope to see as many people as possible at the clubhouse for our Annual Awards evening. Each league team will have a Player of the Year award, and
there will also be a Young Player of the Year award. It promises to be a brilliant evening,
celebrating our best ever season, with the legendary, incomparable, Nick Reeves as MC.
Please come and support our teams on Saturday, and then join us in the evening as we
celebrate the incredible achievements of our great cricket club.

Looking forward to seeing you there.
Simon Caunce, Chairman HCC
